Myanmar -People and Population

Welcome to Myanmar, The Union of Myanmar is geographically situated in Southeast Asia between latitudes 9° 32' N and 28° 31' N and longitudes 92° 10' E and 101° 11' E.  The union of Myanmar is 2,61,228 square miles (676,577 square kilometers). It stretches for 582 miles (936 kilometers) from east to west and 1,275 miles (2,051 kilometers) from north to south. The Republic of the Union of Myanmar has a population of over 57 million. The major racial groups are Burmar, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. The People are called Myanmar.The length of contiguous frontier is 3,828 miles (6,129 kilometers), sharing 1,370 miles with China, 1,310 miles with Thailand, 832 miles with India, 1,687 miles with Bangladesh and 148 miles with Laos respectively. The length of the coastline from the mouth of Naaf River to Kawthaung is approximately 1,385 miles.

Climates & Weather

Myanmar has three seasons.
Monsoon or rainy season (May- October)
Cool dry season (November-February)
Hot season (March-May)
Weather is general temperate and cool in the north and northeastern parts. During the rainy season, lower Myanmar and coastal areas enjoy heavy rain showers but it is dry and pleasant in central regions. Myanmar is an all year round tourist destination.

Culture

Myanmar lies between two great civilizations, India & China, but it has developed its own distinctive culture. Buddhism has a great influence in the daily lives of the Myanmar people. The people have preserved the traditions of close family ties, respect for elders and simple native dress. With tolerance and contentment which are the characteristics of the people, Myanmar hospitality is legendary.

Language

The majority of the people speak Myanmar (Burmese) and English is widely used in major cities like Yangon and Mandalay.

Religion

Over 80 percent of Myanmar embraces Theravada Buddhism. There are Christians, Muslims, Hindus and some animists.

Currency

The local currency is the “Kyat” which is divided into 100 pays. Kyat notes are issued in denominations of 50,100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000, 10000.

Visa Formalities

A valid passport with Entry Visa is required for all visitors. The entry visa to Myanmar is applicable at Myanmar Embassies and Consulate General Offices abroad and it is valid for 28 days.

Overland Entry

Overland entry is permitted to Thai, Chinese and Indian tourists with border passes and to third party tourists with visa at designated check points along Myanmar-Thailand, Myanmar-China and Myanmar-India Borders. Tourists with valid passports and visa can leave by air from Yangon.

Visa on Arrival

Visa on arrival is granted only to packaged cruise liner and chartered flight tourists; and to packaged tour groups from places where there are no Myanmar representation. Visa on arrival is applicable only through licensed travel agencies registered in Myanmar. The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism will endorse to the Immigration authorities on case by case basis.

Airport Tax

When leaving Myanmar by air, an airport tax of approx: FEC/USD 10.00 per person must be paid before check in.

Getting to Myanmar

Available flights include Thai Airways International, Silk Air, Malaysia Airlines, Myanmar Airways International, Thai Air Asia, Bangkok Airways, Jetstar Air, Indian Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Air China, China Airlines, Air Bagan, Air Mandaly, Vietnam Airline.

Travelling within Myanmar

Scheduled domestic flights are available by Myanmar Airways, Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways, Asian Wings, Air KBZ and air Bagan to Mandalay, Bagan, Thandwe, Heho, Sittwe, Tachileik, Myeik, Kawthaung and other destinations. Other modes of transport are train and bus, taxi and trishaw.

Food

Traditional Myanmar food such as Mohinga, Ohno Khaukswe, assorted baked and fried delicacies and a variety of Myanmar cuisines are available at Myanmar restaurants. Chinese and Indian dishes are available at popular food outlets in major towns and cities.

Shopping

Many different Arts & Crafts and antiques are available throughout Myanmar. Handicraft lacquer ware in all shapes and sizes tapestries; wood carving and silverware also make good souvenirs. Myanmar is also renowned for its precious and semi precious and semi precious gemstones and jewelers.

Clothes

Please bring and dress with respect for the local culture. Lightweight, easy to care clothes of cotton and cool fabrics are ideal all years round. A winter sweater or jacket and sock may be need in the cool season when visiting up-country especially around Inle Lake and Kalaw.
